Department of Water Resources is Hiring an ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENTIST Near Sacramento, CA

This is an opportunity to join a diverse, dynamic, and multi-disciplinary team. In this position, you would provide environmental technical assistance for several programs focused on flood risk reduction within the Flood Projects Branch. You would work collaboratively providing environmental regulatory guidance and support to implement flood risk reduction projects in coordination with the Central Valley Flood Protection Board, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and local project sponsors. You would support these projects from design through post construction by participating in planning, leading the preparation and review of California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) documentation, supporting tribal consultation, obtaining permits and clearances, conducting field monitoring and investigations (pre, during and post construction), preparing reports and ensuring regulatory compliance on projects, and making presentations to boards, committees, and management.

Department of Water Resources (DWR) was established in 1956 by the California State Legislature. We manage California’s water resources, systems, and infrastructure, including the State Water Project, in a responsible sustainable way.

Special Requirements

Possession of a valid California driver’s license.
Must be able to survey a variety of terrains including uneven, inclined, rugged, slippery or rocky surfaces, through water and mud; stoop, bend, climb, and crawl; move up to 50 pounds; work in cold conditions.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
Strong knowledge and background in CEQA and National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) processes and documentation, State, and federal environmental regulatory compliance; knowledge of aquatic ecosystems, and Central Valley natural systems, ecology, wildlife/fisheries, or conservation biology. Candidates with strong leadership, partnership-building, facilitation, and negotiation skills are preferred. The position also requires strong verbal and written communication skills, interpersonal skills, and attention to detail.
The incumbent must exercise competent independent judgment, be adaptable and flexible, take effective action, establish and maintain cooperative relations with other agencies, work cooperatively with others, maintain consistent and regular attendance, and keep a flexible work schedule.
